\nNUI Galway in partnernship with TG4 and Nuacht RT\u00c9 \/ TG4 hosts an online course in journalism for transition year students Iriseoir\u00ed an Lae Am\u00e1rach.<\/strong>
\n 
\nTransition Year students in Irish-medium schools are being offered a unique insight to journalism in an online course with some of Ireland\u2019s finest television, radio and digital journalists and broadcasters. NUI Galway, Nuacht RT\u00c9 and TG4 are running the week-long Iriseoir\u00ed an Lae Am\u00e1rach<\/strong> programme in conjunction with An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscola\u00edochta (COGG) and the Department of Education. Over 400 students registered for the inaugural course in 2021.
\n 
\nThe course is aimed at students in post-primary schools in Gaeltacht and other Irish-medium post-primary schools and will be held via Zoom between 1\u20133 March 2022.
\n 
\nEach day a mix of material will be presented by a team drawn from NUI Galway\u2019s media and communications courses and from journalists broadcasting on TG4, RT\u00c9 Raidi\u00f3 na Gaeltachta and producing content for online platforms. The course will also give an insight into following a career path in media.
\n 
\nParticipating journalists this year will include Nuacht TG4 newscaster Eibhl\u00edn N\u00ed Choistealbha, Orla O\u2019Donnell, RT\u00c9 News Legal Correspondent and presenter of TG4’s award-winning documentary series Finn\u00e9<\/strong>, and journalist with TG4’s current affairs programme 7 L\u00e1<\/strong>, Shane \u00d3 Curraigh\u00edn. Drivetime<\/strong> presenter, Cormac \u00d3 hEadhra and Raidi\u00f3 na Gaeltachta<\/strong>\u2019s \u00c1ine N\u00ed Bhreisle\u00e1in, will give an insight into Radio journalism and the journalists P\u00f3il\u00edn Nic G\u00e9idigh (RT\u00c9 Raidi\u00f3 na Gaeltachta) and M\u00e9abh N\u00ed Thuathall\u00e1in (TG4 and Tuairisc.ie) will give a perspective on social and digital journalism. Nuacht TG4<\/strong> News Editor, Beirn\u00ed N\u00ed Chuinn will also give an overview of the responsibilities of the News Editor.

\nTG4\u2019s Director General, Alan Esslemont said: \u201cWe are pleased to extend this collaboration with NUIG for a second year running. Irish language journalism is core part of the TG4 schedule, and we welcome the opportunity to encourage Transition Year students to consider a career in journalism.\u201d<\/em>

\nProfessor Breand\u00e1n Mac Suibhne, Sti\u00farth\u00f3ir L\u00e9inn, Acadamh na hOllscola\u00edochta Gaeilge, NUI Galway, said: \u201cThe last few years, punctuated by the catch-cry of \u2018fake news\u2019, have made us all more conscious of the importance of quality journalism. Iriseoir\u00ed an lae am\u00e1rach enables Transition Year Students to see for themselves what journalism involves and it gives them experience that may help them decide if they wish to pursue a career in a field so vital to democracy and social justice. And it will also give them a sense of the opportunities offered by a BA at NUI Galway.\u201d<\/em>

\nWelcoming the launch of the second year of the initiative, head of COGG, Muireann N\u00ed Mh\u00f3r\u00e1in said: \u201cThis new course will present careers in journalism to post-primary students in Gaeltacht areas and in Irish medium post-primary schools throughout the country along with emphasising the importance of high quality journalism and informing students of opportunities through the medium of Irish in this area.\u201d<\/em>

\nProgramme Director of the MA (Cleachtas Gairmi\u00fail sna Me\u00e1in), NUI Galway, Aodh \u00d3 Coile\u00e1in, said: \u201cThe European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has compared the vital role of journalists to that of \u2018public watchdog\u2019. Accordingly, the Court has afforded the press the broadest scope of protection. Freedom of the press is one of the great gifts of a democratic society. Perhaps now more than at any point in our history, Ireland needs free, critical, impartial and independent media.\u201d\u201cNUI Galway, Nuacht RT\u00c9 and TG4 and An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscola\u00edochta hope that this vibrant new digital course will give an insight to students and perhaps encourage some to choose education in journalism or some aspect of media and broadcasting. The truth always matters.\u201d<\/em>
