The Oscar-nominated film\u00a0<\/span>An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>has its TV premier on Christmas day at 8pm on TG4. The film\u00a0<\/strong>tells the story of C\u00e1it played by newcomer Catherine Clinch, a nine-year-old girl from an overcrowded, dysfunctional family who is sent away to live with foster parents for the summer. Despite a warm reception from the woman, Eibhl\u00edn (Carrie Crowley), the man of the house, Se\u00e1n (Andrew Bennett), keeps his distance from C\u00e1it and she from him, but over time, their strained relationship begins to deepen. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth. Based on Foster by Claire Keegan. An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain is the debut of writer\/director, Colm Bair\u00e9ad and producer, Cleona N\u00ed Chrualaoi of Insc\u00e9al.<\/p>\n

This season\u2019s brand-new documentaries include\u00a0<\/span>Na\u00a0<\/strong>Lumi\u00e8re Gaelacha<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on St. Stephen\u2019s Day 9.10pm. This documentary takes you into the magical world of three brothers, James (Jim), Thomas (Tom) and Philip (Phil) Horgan. Three boys from Youghal Co. Cork, saw a chink of light sparking in Europe, and followed that light, creating cinematic and animation history in Ireland.<\/p>\n

On the 28th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span>of December at 8.25pm in\u00a0<\/span>Thomas Moore- Bard na h\u00c9ireann<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>we explore Moore’s intriguing life and work while hearing new interpretations of many of his best-known songs such as The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer, from contemporary artists such as Duke Special and M\u00e9av N\u00ed Mhaolchatha. Thomas Moore’s life remains a mystery some 250 years on.<\/p>\n

In 2021 Hughes’ pub closed its doors for the last time following the death of its owner. In the film,\u00a0<\/span>Farewell to Hughes\u00a0<\/strong>on the 29th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span>of December at 8.30pm Brendan Gleeson interviews musicians, dancers, and singers to tell the story of the unassuming pub and its lasting contribution to his life and traditional music.<\/p>\n

We honour 50 years of Ladies Gaelic Football in this special documentary\u00a0LGFA@50\u00a0<\/strong>(22\/12 \u00a04pm). It will take viewers on a journey to the heart of the sport, from the local pitch all the way to Croke Park.\u00a0<\/span>An Bothy Band ISL<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Christmas Day 6.25pm) Ireland’s foremost traditional music band reunited for a special documentary. On Christmas Day this documentary airs with Irish Sign Language. With special interviews & behind the scenes rehearsals footage this unique documentary looks into the Bothy Band & their legacy.\u00a0<\/span>An Cliath Oilimpeach\u00a0<\/strong>(2\/1 7.15pm) Filmed over several years, this documentary reveals the many hurdles Diarmuid Clancy faced as he was training to reach the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n

F\u00e1ilte 2025<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on New Year\u2019s Eve at 11.30pm D\u00e1ith\u00ed \u00d3 S\u00e9 and Doireann N\u00ed Ghlac\u00e1in will ring in the New Year with the best of traditional Irish music and song in Beflast’s Cult\u00farlann McAdam \u00d3 Fiaich, with M\u00e1ire Brennan, R\u00edoghnach Connolly, John McSherry, Piaras \u00d3 Lorc\u00e1in and many more. In the Cobblestone in Dublin Fiachna \u00d3 Braon\u00e1in will be joined by Aoife Scott, Liam O’Connor, Meave Mulligan and Marywalloper, Andrew Hendy, while in Tigh Chual\u00e1in in Galway, S\u00edle Seoige will host R\u00f3is\u00edn Seoige with Iml\u00e9, Conor Connolly, Sorcha Costello and Na F\u00edr\u00e9in.<\/p>\n

There will also be a wealth of traditional Irish music with\u00a0<\/span>Geantra\u00ed na Nollag<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on Christmas Day 9.35pm. Recorded in the iconic Tigh Hughes in An Spid\u00e9al and presented by the new series presenter acclaimed singer, Pauline Scanlon. Joining Pauline will be Johnny \u00d3g Connolly, Mary Coughlan & band, Mary Bergin, Eilish Lennon, Se\u00e1n Lennon, Padraig \u00d3 Dubhghail, Seosamh \u00d3 Neachtain, Fergal Scahill, Ryan Molloy, Padraig Jack & Band, Galvian way & C\u00f3r Chois Farraige. \u00a0Carna an Cheoil agus na nAmhr\u00e1n<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(1\/1\/25 9.20pm). For over a century, music collectors have flocked to Carna in Conamara, drawn by its rich Gaelic traditions. In this programme, we immerse ourselves in Carna’s vibrant heritage, exploring the treasures passed down through generations and meeting the new wave of locals proudly keeping their native culture alive today.<\/p>\n

For music lovers, there\u2019s a mix of home-grown talent along with international artists.\u00a0Tommy Fleming- Christmas Songs for a Winter\u2019s Night\u00a0<\/strong>(Christmas Eve 7.15pm) recorded live in the intimate setting of Belleek Castle, Ballina with an invited audience of family and friends &\u00a0<\/span>Tommy Fleming- Live in Galway Cathedral\u00a0<\/strong>(30\/12 7.15pm) recorded in Galway Cathedral filmed before a live audience.\u00a0<\/span>Billie Eilish: Live at the O2<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>– (1\/1\/25) Billie Eilish released a visual record of her breathtaking concert film captured live at The O2 in London in 2023.<\/p>\n

We follow the festival organisers, players, managers and supporters from the teams competing in the tournament. Fiachra and Tadhg peaked at the age of 7 when they appeared on TV to sing a song with their homemade puppet Froggie. 25 years later, they must team up again when Froggie is kidnapped. Another chance to watch\u00a0<\/span>Poit\u00edn (1979)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(29\/12 7.15pm) A digitally remastered version of Bob Quinn’s famous film, the first Irish language film ever made. Two local degenerates terrorize an old man for his poit\u00edn. Starring Cyril Cusack and Mick Lally, Donal McCann and Niall T\u00f3ib\u00edn.\u00a0<\/span>R\u00f3ise & Frank\u00a0<\/strong>(1\/1\/25 7.45pm) award winning Irish language film featuring a woman who believes a dog is the reincarnation of her late husband. Br\u00edd N\u00ed Neacht\u00e1in received IFTA 2023 best actress award for her role in this film.<\/p>\n
