\nTG4 will showcase international 3×3 basketball for the very first time this weekend as the channel brings viewers live coverage of the 2025 FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup<\/strong>. The action takes place from September 5\u20137<\/strong> at the spectacular Ofelia Plads, Copenhagen<\/strong>, and marks a milestone moment for Irish basketball \u2013 the first time an Irish 3×3 team has reached the European finals.

\nCoverage will be available live on the TG4 Player and App<\/strong>, beginning with Ireland\u2019s Pool C matches on Friday, September 5<\/strong>, against Latvia (10:30am)<\/strong> and the Netherlands (3:45pm)<\/strong>. TG4 will also carry the men\u2019s quarter-finals, semi-finals and final on Sunday, September 7<\/strong>, as Ireland aim to continue their historic run.

\nThis year marks the 10th edition of the FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup<\/strong>, with 12 men\u2019s and 12 women\u2019s teams competing for continental glory. Ireland\u2019s men\u2019s team booked their place by defeating Cyprus 21\u201319 in June\u2019s Kosovo qualifier, and now face the challenge of world-class opposition including Olympic medallists from Latvia and the Netherlands.
\n <\/p>\n

Ireland manager Darren McGovern<\/strong> explained what viewers can expect from the 3×3 format:
\n\u201cIt\u2019s really different. It\u2019s a sprint rather than the 40-minute marathon of the 5v5 game. What you\u2019ll see is a really fast pace, quick transitions, and execution off dead balls. Everything is about reacting to the defence. You\u2019ll see lots of two-point shots \u2013 the equivalent of a three-pointer in 5v5 \u2013 dunks, and scramble defence at a fantastic intensity. The last two or three minutes are full energy: players are tired, fouls build up, and it becomes chaos at times. It\u2019s a fantastic watch. When games are close and it comes down to that race to 21 points, you\u2019re holding your breath. Anyone watching for the first time will immediately say: \u2018Where can I see more of this?\u2019\u201d<\/em>

\nMcGovern also noted the potential for surprise results:
\n\u201cIn this format, changes happen regularly. The two-point shot is worth double, so if you hit two or three early it gives you a cushion. But teams can chase back quickly. That\u2019s part of what makes it great \u2013 the chase, catching teams and then pulling away again. The shorter games give lower-ranked countries a real chance to shock the big nations. Our plan is simple: execute offensively as best we can and then slow teams down defensively.\u201d<\/em>
\n <\/p>\n

John Carroll, one of Ireland\u2019s leading players<\/strong>, said the unique setting and novelty of 3×3 makes it stand out:
\n\u201cThat\u2019s a massive part of it. Being outside in cool venues takes over a city for three days. It\u2019s becoming its own niche and that\u2019s what drew me to it as well. Ten minutes and you\u2019re in and out.\u201d<\/em>

\nCarroll added that Ireland has the potential to compete at the highest level:
\n\u201c3×3 is definitely growing, and I think Ireland can be good at it if we put the time and effort in. We have players who really suit the game, so success isn\u2019t as far away as it feels in 5v5. When you look at EuroBasket, you see Nikola Joki\u0107, the best player in the world, competing there \u2013 that feels far away. But 3×3? That\u2019s not as far potentially.\u201d<\/em>
\n <\/p>\n

The defending men\u2019s champions are Austria<\/strong>. With Ireland entering the competition as one of the lowest-ranked qualifiers, the fast-paced 3×3 format gives them a genuine chance to shock Europe\u2019s elite.
