{"id":7778,"date":"2016-01-11T12:08:22","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T12:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.tg4.ie\/en\/corporate\/press\/press-releases\/2016-2\/11-01-16\/"},"modified":"2019-06-25T12:48:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T11:48:22","slug":"11-01-16","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dev.tg4.ie\/en\/information\/press\/press-releases\/2016-2\/11-01-16\/","title":{"rendered":"11.01.16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During 2016, we will broadcast award-winning\u00a0 series from our archive as well as first-run especially commissioned new content on the theme of the Rising and the Birth and Growth of a nation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This centenary output comprises scores of important and entertaining TV programmes \u2013 factual, dramatic, musical and sporting content.<\/p>\n<p>Two newly commissioned drama series that are inspired by the Rising will offer an alternative viewpoint.\u00a0 <strong><em>\u00c9ir\u00ed Amach Am\u00fa\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0brings an element of time-travel to the event as three Dublin men from our own era find themselves transported to Dublin\u2019s Sackville Street on Easter Monday 1916 \u2013 with some unlikely results.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Eipic\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(begins 4 Feb) is a slightly more\u00a0 oblique contemporary\u00a0\u00a0 musical comedy \u2018take\u2019 on the Rising as it chronicles the efforts of a bunch of rural teenagers in 2016 to start their own musical revolution as they take over the local (closed) Post Office to try to make a statement of their own, in music and in Irish.<\/p>\n<p>TG4\u2019s factual output this year will provide viewers with a wide range of informative and entertaining content that highlights some of the many threads that led to the Rising and the War of Independence and Civil War that followed and to the foundation and the building of the nation in the decades that followed.<\/p>\n<p>TG4 has devoted two documentary slots every week from January until end of April to commemorate 2016.\u00a0\u00a0 The dedicated <strong>Wednesday evening prime-time slot (7.30pm<\/strong>) will concentrate on the Rising itself and the personalities and movements that brought it about. \u00a0\u00a0This slot will be headlined by TG4\u2019s award-winning hour-long series of profiles of each of the leaders of the Easter Rising executed in the immediate aftermath Seachtar<em> na C\u00e1sca\/Seachtar<\/em> <em>Dearmadta.\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0\u00a0The schedule is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"75%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>06\/01\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Tom Clarke<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>13\/01\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Thomas MacDonagh<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>20\/01\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Patrick Pearse<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>27\/01\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Michael O\u2019Hanrahan<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>03\/02\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Joseph Plunkett<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>10\/02\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Ned Daly<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>17\/02\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Willie Pearse<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>24\/02\/2016<\/td>\n<td>John MacBride<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>02\/03\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Sean Heuston<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>09\/03\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Michael Mallin<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>16\/03\/2016<\/td>\n<td>\u00c9amonn Ceannt<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>23\/03\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Con Colbert<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>30\/03\/2016<\/td>\n<td>Se\u00e1n Mac Diarmada<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to those programmes that deal specifically with 1916,\u00a0 TG4 is also dedicating another prime time slot,\u00a0 <strong>Tuesday nights 9.30pm\u00a0 <\/strong>to a series of major documentaries and drama documentaries \u00a0that focus on some of the major events\/controversies and sometimes neglected happenings that shed a new light on the period itself and on the 100 years \u00a0since the Rising.\u00a0 These include the unlikely court case of An<strong><em> Trucail\u00edn Donn<\/em><\/strong> \u2013in which a Gaeltacht man was prosecuted for having his name, contrary to the law, painted as Gaeilge on his donkey-cart.\u00a0 <strong>P\u00e1draig Pearse<\/strong> defended\u00a0 (unsuccessfully) in his only court-room appearance as a barrister but while the court case was lost, the court of public opinion was overwhelming in its disapproval and the Gaelic League had a major publicity triumph\u00a0 (Tues 12 February)<\/p>\n<p>The birth and growth of a nation is a multi-faceted and complex process. TG4\u2019s\u00a0 wide-ranging factual and drama output profiles many of the key figures and addresses some of the main political, cultural, gender and other issues that arose (or bedevilled) the Rising and succeeding decades<em>.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Cumann na mBan<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0(2 Feb) was a key component of the Rising itself and women like the pioneering doctor <strong><em>Kathleen Lynn<\/em><\/strong> (23 Feb) also made a huge contribution to the struggle for important freedoms that did not arrive with political independence.<\/p>\n<p>The Free State\u2019s decision to execute certain Republicans like <strong><em>Erskine Childers<\/em><\/strong> (19 Jan) are still controversial and had a far-reaching impact.\u00a0\u00a0 But Ireland\u2019s story is not just a political one.\u00a0 The role of sporting figures like legendary Irish, but Welsh-born boxer <strong><em>Jim Driscoll<\/em> <\/strong>in mollifying anti-Irish feeling in Britain (26 Jan) had their own effect on how our story unfolded.\u00a0 One of the most enigmatic figures to emerge from the War of Independence and a key figure in Irish politics in the middle of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u00a0 <strong><em>Ernest Blythe<\/em> <\/strong>(15 April) <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is also profiled \u2013 there was a lot more to this complex character than just his notorious 1924 Budget decision to cut the old-age pension.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Frank Sheehy Skeffington<\/em><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong>8 March) was a well-connected journalist who was an eye witness to key moments in Irish history.\u00a0 A pacifist, he was also a key influencer on many important political and literary figures who was cruelly murdered at the very start of the Rising<\/p>\n<p>The new Free State was born of strife but had to undertake some huge projects as it strove to take its place among the nations of the world.\u00a0 None of these projects was bigger than the Shannon Scheme to design, build and commission a massive hydro-electric generating plant at Ardnacrusha, north of Limerick.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><em>Ginead\u00f3ir an St\u00e1it (<\/em><\/strong>9 Feb) tells this epic story.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these mid-week slots, TG4\u2019s programme-schedule will feature 1916 in other aspects too.\u00a0 The 1916 Centenary falls on the exact date of the GAA\u2019s National League Finals in Croke Park that will be televised live.\u00a0 TG4 is working with the GAA on a major event at that historic venue on the day to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>The Rising leaders included many literary and artistic figures and TG4\u2019s arts output will reflect this with profiles of <strong>M\u00e1ire Mhac an tSaoi<\/strong>\u00a0 herself a daughter of\u00a0 the Rising veteran and major 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Irish politician, Se\u00e1n McEntee. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In conjunction with An Chomhairle Eala\u00edon\/The Arts Council, we have commissioned 8 short films on the theme of 100 years of Irish art (15 March).<\/p>\n<p>Our annual <strong>Gradam Ceoil TG4<\/strong> awards (date) in traditional music in mid-February will also contain a special 1916-related award to mark the Centenary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During 2016, we will broadcast award-winning\u00a0 series from our archive as well as first-run especially commissioned new content on the theme of the Rising and the Birth and Growth of a nation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This centenary output comprises scores of important and entertaining TV programmes \u2013 factual, dramatic, musical and sporting content.
